A few weeks ago, I had the privilege to go to LA, and attend this wonderful symposium sponsored by my alma mater UB ( SUNY at Buffalo). The main focus of the event was to give the participants insider knowledge of how to break in and succeed in the entertainment industry. Each workshop was taught by very influential people in the entertainment industry who either had gone to UB in the past or have some ties to the university.
The workshop I went to was entitled Magazine Journalism and Non-Fiction Writing, and it was taught by Alan Steinberg, author of New York Times bestseller BEHIND THE MASK: My Double Life in Baseball, with Dave Pallone, and the 1996 bestseller, BLACK PROFILES IN COURAGE: A Legacy of African-American Achievement with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
He shared a lot of insightful tips and "tid bits" on how to build longevity in the entertainment industry as a writer, but the one thing that he kept reiterating was that in order to be a good writer you must first read a lot, then you follow that up with writing. "You must perfect your craft"
You see, I am an aspiring journalist, with plans of being the next big reporter in sports. I dream of covering the big game, interviewing the greatest and entertaining the masses. I want the prestige of Bryant Gumbel, with the excitement of Scott Van Pelt, mixed with the swag of Stephen A. Smith. Throw in the Craig Sagger clothing line and I'm all set to lead this next generation of sports personalities.
There is a lot of things I still need to learn if I want to be the "Best," and this blog is going to help me achieve that goal. I'm going to write, write, write, about anything and everything from my thought of the day, to my words of encouragement.
According to the Writers Boot Camp, " The secret to writing... is writing."
But guess what...? It's no longer a secret!
Viewers of the blog, please feel free to add your thoughts and comments, and keep an eye out for more of my writing.
